Be creative like Deepseek

Deepseek was really creative in being better and cheaper than OpenAI. Last week, DeepSeek launched the model Deepseek-R1, which broke the internet — everyone is talking about it, from memes to big companies.
OpenAI has been the leader in the AI ranking for a long time, but it has always been questioned about its approach: it started as open-source but became a private company, pricing its products very expensively.
Today, the best plan to use ChatGPT, for example, by OpenAI — where you can access Operator (a model that can use the browser to do things for you) and Sora (a model for creating videos) — costs $200.
On the other hand, Deepseek positioned itself as a cheaper and smaller company that, in a short time, used OpenAI’s knowledge to build an optimized AI. This AI can be used locally on our own computers or servers, for example, at a lower cost than OpenAI.
Today, I don’t want to talk about whether it is ethical to take OpenAI’s source code to build Deepseek, but I want to focus on the creativity Deepseek needed to build its AI using older hardware from NVIDIA because NVIDIA is refusing to sell high-end technology to China.
OpenAI can grow by using the best hardware, following a “brute force” approach, where they scale up together.
Deepseek worked its magic to optimize its AI, making it use less hardware while delivering better results.
I was reading a book called Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon, and in one chapter, he talks about how we can use limited input to do more — the famous “less is more”.
I felt excited when I saw Deepseek using this approach in real life, being creative, and looking for ways to improve and compete with OpenAI’s business.
So, when you need to be more creative, I recommend filtering the content you consume.
What videos have you watched? What books have you read? How deeply do you explore subjects?
Limit your resources and build more — this will improve your creativity.
